Solutions around Knee Osteotomies – Newclip Meeting May 2016

Osteotomy was the main focus of the symposium sponsored by Newclip Technics and run under the auspices of ESSKA in May 2016.

Topics included.:

  • High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO)
  • Combined HTO & ACL reconstruction
  • Patient-specific cutting guides
  • Femoral osteotomy

The Newclip plate is called the 'activmotion plate'. It is the leading plate in France for HTO and is literally half the size of its competitors. I have also helped to design a new plate which has now been launched, and will be implanting the first one in the next few weeks. It's very similar but stronger for larger patients

I was privileged to chair the Newclip workshop, where -

  • we had some great talks with James Robinson who spoke about his experience with combined ACL and HTO - because Newclip have a dedicated plate for that - and the interesting thing was that he presented his case series with 2 year data with no failures,
  • I presented my experience with up to 18 months data with no failures,
  • Sébastien Tomes for the French group presented 3 year data with no failures in high numbers.

So this plate is working very well and it was good to hear that we were all having a similar, very positive experience.

We all had some lovely talks from Patrick Dijan - he’s a very highly respected knee surgeon from Paris, who is one of the best known faces of knee surgery in France, and he also had some very good experiences to present in terms of Newclip’s PSI (Patient Specific Instrumentation) and his experience with distal femoral osteotomy.

In my own workshop that I ran at the venue we were delighted to see 100 people in the room - all coming to hear about the Newclip plate and my experiences with this very small plate, using my minimally invasive procedure and a precision bone wedge.
